Beloved in the Lord, I welcome you to another episode of our weekly interaction in the word of God. How has been your week? The text for the week is Judges 11:29-33. The topic is "The concept of vow".

Vow refers to a solemn promise to perform some act, or behave in a specified manner, especially a promise to live and act in accordance with the rules of a religious order. The case study for the sermon is Jephtha. And Jephtha made a vow to the LORD: "If you give the Ammonites into my hands, whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the Lord's, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering. "

There are references in the Bible that confirms the concept of vow. Vow has a unique significance when the principles are strictly adhere to. But as in most cases, and precisely pertaining to our case study, most vows results in negative consequence "a curse " rather than the blessings intended.

According to the scriptural reading, the following facts and lessons are established :

1. There are principles and promises attached to all vows. Such principles must be strictly adhere to.

2. In most cases, God function as superordonate in vows. No record of when God defaulted in the deeds of vow.

3. A vow confirms the trust of the subordinate in the ability of the superordinate.

4. There is a general and biblical believe with records that vow speeds up actions. However, the Bible warn that it is better not to make a vow than not fulfilling it.

5. Prayer without a vow are still being answered by God.

6. As earlier stated, when a vow is not fulfilled, the result become negative.

7. Be moderate and precise with your vow. Let it be what you can fulfill. 'Whatever' as used by Jephtha was not precise. He later regretted it. Judges 11:31.
