After spending so much money in the church without receiving any blessings in return from God, one may intend to ask questions about what really is the problem. In an article, Gbenga Oyeleye says in such occasion the problem is from you. He narrated how a member lost almost everything he had after spending so much as the chairman of his parish annual adult harvest and thanksgiving service.

“He spent so much during the harvest especially during their musical night where he was spraying huge amount of money in foreign currency on a popular gospel artist that was invited to entertain the congregation,” Oyeleye wrote in the article. “Hitherto, the harvest day was over and after spending so much, he was carried away with so much expectations and rewards but eventually got nothing. His business crumbled, his financial strength became so weak and he suddenly fell into series of debt and finally ran into bankruptcy.”

Oyeleye said in seeking answers to what befell the man, God revealed to him that:

1. When you intentionally spend money in church without humility (throwing cash in the air or public display of wealth arrogantly) you have wasted your money, God hates pride (1peter 5 vs 5-6).

2. When you spend deceitfully only to impress the pastor, congregation and oppress the poor, then you have no reward at all (Acts 5 vs 1-10).

3. When you lavish your money on musicians/choristers in church just for them to hail you and for vain glory without attending to the poor and less privileges within the church and those around you, then you have already received your reward, expect nothing more (Mathew 6 vs 2).

4. When you openly come out to donate just for people to notice you or to earn your pastor’s praise or accolades, then you have sown wrongfully without reward because your heart embraced such ungodly distractions (Mathew 6 vs 4).

5. When you bring unclean money (money gotten from rituals, fraud, theft, prostitution etc) to church as donations, trust me, the result is far more regrettable beyond imagination.

He further advised that, “let us spend wisely in the house of the Lord with a pure heart of love, sincerity, humility, care and cheerfulness (Ephesians 4 vs 32).
