Clergies of the church in a meeting

The ways of God are mysterious, his "foolishness and weakness" are wiser and stronger than what we possess. The growth of Celestial Church in United Kingdom started from a disagreement between two group.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the church in United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, a video documentary produced by Celestial Weekly tells how the church grew from a single room to a church with over 100 parishes.

From the video, it is interesting to note that Celestial Church was informally established in United Kingdom by a woman, Mother Celestial Olaiya with the support of Mother Celestial Bolanle Adenejolu who was an Anglican and the first female prophet of the church in London.

These women conducted abridged church services every Friday in a single room for months, because of the absence of male members as at that time. Also Sunday service do not begin at 10am, but by 3pm.

However, these women formally notify the church authorities in Ketu, Nigeria about the existence of the church in United Kingdom, by writing to Reverend SBJ Oshoffa and Reverend Alexander Bada and informing them about the activities going on and the need for the Church to have an established and formal presence in the United Kingdom.

Weeks later they got a reply from the church authorities in Ketu appreciating their works and they (females) were directed to continue leading the church till there were enough members and dedicated male members.

The church experienced a massive increase in members after the first adult harvest held in 1969. This made the church relocate from a small apartment to a larger one, now known as Harton Street, which became the first parish of the church outside Africa.

However, a disagreement among members of Harton Street parish over the detainment of the parish head, Superior Matthew Aina and his wife at Gatwick airport while returning from the Christmas Convocation in Nigeria resulted to a division, which sowed the establish other parishes across the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, which have increased to more than 90 parishes as at today.
